La Lira pesante fu una valuta, mai entrata in circolazione, proposta da Bettino Craxi nel 1986 a Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, allora governatore della Banca d’Italia. L’idea di fondo era quella di riportare il valore della moneta italiana a un ordine di grandezza vicino alle valute straniere che circolavano allora in Europa, come ad esempio il Marco tedesco e il Franco francese, prima delle grandi svalutazioni e guerre. La proposta era di sostituire la Lira italiana con la nuova Lira pesante, dove il cambio sarebbe stato di 1 Lira pesante per 1000 Lire. Una possibile strada sembrava quella di sovrastampare le banconote in circolazione, ma l’introduzione subì diversi ostacoli. Altri Paesi che, nel corso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, avevano vissuto l’esperienza di una svalutazione devastante adottarono altri sistemi. Tra questi la Grecia che nel 1950 a causa dell’inflazione selvaggia generata dalla circolazione della moneta di occupazione delle armate italogermaniche, aveva visto precipitare il valore della dracma a un’unità trascurabile – operò una conversione moltiplicando per mille l’unita monetaria, ossia togliendo tre zeri al valore delle banconote. La Francia aspettò sino al 1958, data in cui Charles De Gaulle, appena giunto al potere, fece sovrastampare le banconote della Banque de France con il contro valore innouveaux francs, scritto con due zeri in meno, che moltiplicava per cento il potere d’acquisto del nuovo franco. Per quanto riguarda l’Italia, furono create piccole quantità di Lire pesanti, in banconote da una, due, cinque e dieci lire, ai giorni nostri oggetto di collezionismo. Il progetto, per motivi tecnici e politici, non fu mai portato a termine e la Lira pesante non entrò mai in circolazione. vedi immagini
